Unless you are Asian or have lived in Asia or perhaps have studied Chinese medicine its unlikely you will have heard of Gua Sha. It is probably one of the best kept secrets and is an extremely good technique for Pain Relief and certain organic disorders.
When I was living in Australia and fresh out of Acupuncture College I used to perform gua sha a lot. I guess because it was new to me and I was very excited about it but it also worked very well and my clients were happy with the results. For some reason along the way I kind of forgot about it until the other day.
I had a client in the clinic who had been suffering from bronchitis for a long time and we were getting some results from acupuncture but we had plateaud and were not getting any further. This is when I remembered Gua sha and its excellent effects on bronchial disorders. I treated her back that morning and by the afternoon I received a call from my client telling me how much better she was feeling. I had also forgotten the immediate results it can have as well.
Gua sha is also known as spooning, coining or scraping. It is a technique where you use a tool (the best being finely polished buffalo horn) and you 'scrape' the skin to produce a reddish colour on the skin. This is called petachae. Gua means scrape and sha means the reddish colour produced. It can be used on many different types of chronic or acute pains and also organs disorders. It is commonly used to treat asthma, bronchial disorders, the flu and the common cold. It's excellent at removing muscular pain and for relieving 'knotty tension' that accumulates between the shoulder blades.
The colour of the petechae is also looked at after the gua sha has been performed because this tells the practitioner many things. Generally, the darker the colour the more stagnation there is present. It is not only a powerful healing tool but also perfectly safe for the client. You can expect to have some red marks on your back which can look pretty dramatic for 2-4 days but as long as you know about this and are not wearing that backless cocktail dress in the next day or so you will be fine.
To perform gua sha you should first apply some oil on the body where you are going to do it. I have found the best oil for this is rice bran oil because of its viscosity and healing properties. one of the ways to diagnose a person who needs to be gua sha-ed is to press your finger on their skin where they have pain and if the colour does not turn pink again quickly, in other words it remains the white colour from the pressure given, this is a diagnostic indicator of needing treatment.
